  1. Roger joined the school in London as a man in his maturity. He had served as an officer in the Second World War, and he had a business in real estate. He himself had a huge house on Lyndhurst Road in Hampstead – which he immediately made available to students. Three of us took rooms there, and shortly after that we began to have the Wednesday night meetings at his house. One thing Roger was not wanting in was good householder. He used to check the work of his own lawyers. He was a great example of qualities the center needed, and often advised students in straightening out their affairs. He was unpretentious, yet supportive in every way. And he was always enquiring, in an intelligent way, about the work. When his final illness came he bore it in a way that was an example to us all: uncomplaining, accepting, and steadfast. Being a real estate agent he had chosen a house with a view of greater London. I remember in the last evenings with Roger, in his room late at night, seeing behind him the lights of the vast city of London and hearing the dull roar of its traffic. It had lost one of its best, and that was the Fellowship’s gain.
